（９）

ある晩ばん

子供こどもらが寝ねたあとで

お雪ゆきは

行灯あんどんの、あかりで

針はり仕事しごとをしていました。

（行灯あんどん：paper lamp）

（針はり仕事しごと：sewing（針はり：needle））

One night, after the children had gone to sleep, O-Yuki was sewing by the light of a paper lamp;

みのきちは

彼女かのじょを見みながら

言いいました。

and Minokichi, watching her, said: -

「お前まえが、そうして

　あかりの中なかで、針はり仕事しごとをしているのを

　見みると

　私わたしが十八じゅうはちの時ときの不思議ふしぎなことを

　思おもい出だす。

（お前まえ：you）

（思おもい出だす：to remember）

"To see you sewing there, with the light on your face, makes me think of a strange thing that happened when I was a lad of eighteen.

　私わたしは、その時とき

　今いまの、お前まえのように

　きれいな、そして、色いろの白しろい人ひとを

　見みた。

I then saw somebody as beautiful and white as you are now

　その女おんなは

　お前まえに、そっくりだった……」

（そっくり：to look exactly like …）

- indeed, she was very like you." . . .

針はり仕事しごとをしながら

目めも、あげずに

お雪ゆきは、答こたえました。

Without lifting her eyes from her work, O-Yuki responded:

「その人ひとの話はなしを教おしえて。

"Tell me about her.

　その人ひとに、どこで会あったの？」

Where did you see her?"

そこで、みのきちは

船頭せんどうの小屋こやでの

恐おそろしい夜よるのことを

彼女かのじょに、話はなしました。

Then Minokichi told her about the terrible night in the ferryman's hut,

ほほえみながら、ささやきながら

彼かれの上うえに屈かがんだ

白しろい女おんなのこと──

- and about the White Woman that had stooped above him, smiling and whispering,

それから

もさくが、死しんだこと──

- and about the silent death of old Mosaku.

彼かれは、言いいました。

「現実げんじつでも、夢ゆめでも

　お前まえのように、きれいな人ひとを、見みたのは

　その時ときだけだ。

（現実げんじつ：reality）

And he said: - "Asleep or awake, that was the only time that I saw a being as beautiful as you.

　もちろん、それは

　人ひとではなかった。

Of course, she was not a human being;

　私わたしは

　その女おんなが怖こわかった。

　……とても怖こわかった。

and I was afraid of her, - very much afraid,

　……しかし、その女おんなは

　とても白しろかった

- but she was so white

　……私わたしが見みたのは

　夢ゆめだったのか

　……わからない

I . . . Indeed, I have never been sure whether it was a dream that I saw,

　……それとも

　雪女ゆきおんなだったのか……」
