（７）

次つぎの年としの冬ふゆ

ある晩ばんのことです。

One evening, in the winter of the following year,

みのきちは、

家いえに帰かえる途中とちゅう

偶然ぐうぜん

同おなじ道みちを旅たびしている女おんなに

会あいました。

（偶然ぐうぜん：by chance）

（旅たびする：to travel）

as he was on his way home, he overtook a girl who happened to be traveling by the same road.

彼女かのじょは

背せが高たかく

やせていて、とても、きれいでした。

（背せが高たかい：tall）

（やせている：slim）

She was a tall, slim girl, very good-looking;

みのきちが、挨拶あいさつすると

それに答こたえた美うつくしい彼女かのじょの声こえは

まるで、鳥とりの鳴なき声ごえのようでした。

（挨拶あいさつ：greeting）

（美うつくしい：beautiful）

and she answered Minokichi's greeting in a voice as pleasant to the ear as the voice of a song-bird.

それから、彼かれは

彼女かのじょと並ならんで歩あるき

一緒いっしょに話はなし始はじめました。

Then he walked beside her; and they began to talk.

彼女かのじょは

名前なまえを

「お雪ゆき」と言いいました。

The girl said that her name was O-Yuki;

そして

最近さいきん、両親りょうしんがなくなったこと……

（最近さいきん：lately）

（なくなる：to die）

that she had lately lost both of her parents;

これから江戸えどへ行いくこと……

（江戸えど：Tokyo）

and that she was going to Edo,

そこに、

貧まずしい親戚しんせきがいること……

（貧まずしい：poor）

（親戚しんせき：relations）

where she happened to have some poor relations,

彼かれらが

仕事しごとを見みつけてくれるかもしれないこと……

who might help her to find a situation as servant.

そんなことを話はなしました。

みのきちは、すぐに、その女おんなが

好すきになりました。

Minokichi soon felt charmed by this strange girl;

彼女かのじょは

見みれば見みるほど、きれいだったのです。

and the more that he looked at her, the handsomer she appeared to be.

彼かれは、彼女かのじょに

結婚けっこんを約束やくそくした人ひとが

いるか

と、聞ききました

（約束やくそく：promise）

He asked her whether she was yet betrothed;

彼女かのじょは、ほほえみ

「いません」

と答こたえました。

and she answered, laughingly, that she was free.

それから、今度こんどは

彼女かのじょが、みのきちに、

結婚けっこんしているのか

あるいは、結婚けっこんの約束やくそくをしているのか

と聞ききました。

（今度こんど：now, next time）

Then, in her turn, she asked Minokichi whether he was married, or pledged to marry;

みのきちは

「結婚けっこんは

　まだ若わかいので

　考かんがえたことがない。

　家族かぞくは母ははがいるだけだ」

と答こたえました。

and he told her that, although he had only a widowed mother to support, the question of an "honorable daughter-in-law" had not yet been considered, as he was very young....

こんな話はなしのあと

彼かれらは

しばらく、だまって歩あるきました。

After these confidences, they walked on for a long while without speaking;

しかし

心こころを伝つたえるには

目めだけで十分じゅうぶんでした。

（気きがあれば、

　目めも、口くちほどに、ものを言いう）

（伝つたえる：to tell）

（十分じゅうぶん：enough）

but, as the proverb declares, Ki ga areba, me mo kuchi hodo ni mono wo iu: "When the wish is there, the eyes can say as much as the mouth."

村むらに着つくまでに

二人ふたりは

互たがいのことが

とても、好すきになっていました。

（互たがい：each other）

By the time they reached the village, they had become very much pleased with each other;

そして、みのきちは

しばらく自分じぶんの家いえで

休やすんで行いくように

お雪ゆきに言いいました。

and then Minokichi asked O-Yuki to rest awhile at his house.

彼女かのじょは、しばらく、恥はずかしそうにしていました。

（恥はずかしそうに：shyly, timidly）

After some shy hesitation,

が

彼かれと一緒いっしょに

彼かれの家いえへ行いくことにしました。

she went there with him;

彼かれの母ははは

彼女かのじょを、温あたたかく歓迎かんげいしました。

（歓迎かんげい：welcome）

and his mother made her welcome,

彼女かのじょのために

温あたたかい食事しょくじを

用意よういしました。

（食事しょくじ：meal）

（用意よういする：to prepare）

and prepared a warm meal for her.

お雪ゆきの振ふる舞まいが

とても、良よかったので

みのきちの母ははも、すぐに

彼女かのじょが、好すきになりました。

（振ふる舞まい：attitude）

O-Yuki behaved so nicely that Minokichi's mother took a sudden fancy to her,

彼女かのじょに

しばらく、家いえに、いるように

勧すすめます。

（勧すすめる：to recommend）

and persuaded her to delay her journey to Edo.

結局けっきょく

お雪ゆきは、もう、江戸えどへは行いきませんでした。

（結局けっきょく：after all）

And the natural end of the matter was that Yuki never went to Edo at all.

彼女かのじょは

みのきちの家いえに残のこり

彼かれと、結婚けっこんしました。

（残のこる：to remain）

She remained in the house, as an "honorable daughter-in-law."
