二人の男は、吹雪の中で、
白い女に出会う。
その美しい女は、二人を殺そうとする。

武蔵という、ある村に
もさくと、みのきちという
二人の木こりが
住んでいました。

In a village of Musashi Province, there lived two woodcutters: Mosaku and Minokichi.
もさくは
年を取っていました。
（年を取っている：old（年を取る：to get old））
At the time of which I am speaking, Mosaku was an old man;
みのきちは
十八の子供でした。
and Minokichi, his apprentice, was a lad of eighteen years.
毎日、彼らは
村から遠い森へ
一緒に行きました。
（森：forest）
Every day they went together to a forest situated about five miles from their village.
その森へ行く途中に
大きな川がありました。
（途中に：on the way to …）
On the way to that forest there is a wide river to cross;
そこには、
小さな船が、置いてありました。
（船：boat, ship）
and there is a ferry-boat.
その川には、
何度か橋が作られましたが
橋は
洪水のたびに、流されました。
（何度か：several times）
（洪水：flood）
（～のたびに：each time）
（流す：to wash away）
Several times a bridge was built where the ferry is; but the bridge was each time carried away by a flood.
普通の橋では
はげしい川の水に
耐えられなかったのです。
（普通：common）
（はげしい：hard, violent）
（耐える：to resist）
No common bridge can resist the current there when the river rises.
