あるとても寒い晩、
もさくと、みのきちが
家に帰る途中のことです。
はげしい吹雪に、なりました。
（吹雪：snowstorm）
Mosaku and Minokichi were on their way home, one very cold evening, when a great snowstorm overtook them.
川に、着きましたが
船頭は、もう帰って
いませんでした。
（船頭：boatman）
They reached the ferry; and they found that the boatman had gone away,
船は、川の向こう側に置いたままでした。
leaving his boat on the other side of the river.
吹雪の中で
川を泳ぐことはできまません。
It was no day for swimming;
それで、二人は
船頭が使っている小屋に
行きました。
（小屋：hut）
and the woodcutters took shelter in the ferryman's hut,
小さな小屋でしたが、二人は、
行くところがあっただけでも
よかった、と思いました。
--thinking themselves lucky to find any shelter at all.
小屋に
火はありません。
（火：fire）
There was no brazier in the hut,
火をおこすところも
ありません。
（おこす：to make, to cause）
nor any place in which to make a fire:
窓もない、
二畳ほどの小さな小屋でした。
（二畳：two tatami mats）
it was only a two-mat [*] hut, with a single door, but no window.
（[*] That is to say, with a floor-surface of about six feet square.）
もさくと、みのきちは
戸をしっかり閉めて
蓑をかぶって
横になりました。
（蓑：straw rain-coat）
（かぶる：to put on, to wear）
（横になる：to lie down）
Mosaku and Minokichi fastened the door, and lay down to rest, with their straw rain-coats over them.
初めは
それほど寒いと感じませんでした。
（感じる：to feel）
At first they did not feel very cold;
それに
吹雪は、すぐに、止む
と思っていました。
（止む：to stop）
and they thought that the storm would soon be over.
