年を取った、もさくは
すぐに、眠りました。

The old man almost immediately fell asleep;
しかし、若い、みのきちは、眠れません。
長い間
起きていました。
（起きている：to lie awake）
but the boy, Minokichi, lay awake a long time,
はげしく戸に吹きつけ続ける
風や、雪の音を
聞いていました。
（吹きつける：to slash, to spray）
（続ける：to continue）
（音：sound, noise）
listening to the awful wind, and the continual slashing of the snow against the door.
川は
ごうごうと鳴りました。
（鳴る：to sound）
The river was roaring;
小屋は、
海の上に浮かんだ、小さな舟のように
ゆれました。
（浮かぶ：to float）
（ゆれる：to sway）
and the hut swayed and creaked like a junk at sea.
それは、恐ろしい吹雪でした。
It was a terrible storm;
空気は
少しずつ、冷たくなります。
（空気：air）
and the air was every moment becoming colder;
みのきちは、蓑の中で
ふるえていました。
（ふるえる：to shiver）
and Minokichi shivered under his raincoat.
寒いのに……
それでも、とうとう
彼も眠ってしまいました。
But at last, in spite of the cold, he too fell asleep.
