振り返ると
外へ、出て行きました。
（振り返る：to turn around）
With these words, she turned from him, and passed through the doorway.
その時、彼は
自分が動けることに気が付きました。
（動ける：can move（動く：to move））
（気が付く：to notice, to find）
Then he found himself able to move;
彼は
飛び起きて
外を見ました。
（飛び起きる：to spring up）
and he sprang up, and looked out.
女は
もう、見えませんでした。
But the woman was nowhere to be seen;
雪は
小屋の中へ
はげしく吹きこんでいました。
（吹きこむ：外から中へ吹く）
（吹く：to blow）
and the snow was driving furiously into the hut.
みのきちは
戸を閉めて
木の棒で固定しました。
（棒：billet）
（固定する：to fix）
Minokichi closed the door, and secured it by fixing several billets of wood against it.
彼は
風が
戸を押し開けたのかもしれない
と、思いました。
He wondered if the wind had blown it open;
あるいは
夢を見ていたのかもしれない
と思いました。
（あるいは：or）
（夢を見る：to dream）
- he thought that he might have been only dreaming,
雪の明かりを
白い女の姿と
見間違えたのかもしれない
とも、思いました。
（姿：figure）
（見間違える：to mistake）
and might have mistaken the gleam of the snow-light in the doorway for the figure of a white woman:
しかし
はっきりとしませんでした。
（はっきりする：to know for sure）
but he could not be sure.
彼は
もさくを呼びました。
He called to Mosaku,
しかし、もさくが
返事をしないので
彼は
怖くなりました。
（返事：answer）
and was frightened because the old man did not answer.
彼は、暗い小屋の中で
手をのばして
もさくの顔に、ふれました。
（のばす：to put out）
He put out his hand in the dark, and touched Mosaku's face,
それは、氷でした。
（氷：ice）
and found that it was ice!
もさくは
凍って
死んでいました。……
（凍る：to freeze）
Mosaku was stark and dead....
