He was awakened by a showering of snow in his face.
小屋の戸は
開いていました。
The door of the hut had been forced open;

雪の明かり（雪明かり）で
部屋のなかに
女が見えました。
（明かり：light）
and, by the snow-light (yuki-akari), he saw a woman in the room,
彼女は
白い着物を
着ていました。
（着物：kimono, clothes）
- a woman all in white.
女は
もさくの上に屈むと
彼に
息をふきかけました。
（屈む：to bend down）
（息：breath）
（ふきかける：to blow）
She was bending above Mosaku, and blowing her breath upon him;
彼女の息は
白い煙のように
輝きました。
（煙：smoke）
（輝く：to shine）
- and her breath was like a bright white smoke.
その時
彼女は
みのきちの方を向きました。
（向く：to turn）
Almost in the same moment she turned to Minokichi,
そして
彼の上に、屈みました。
and stooped over him.
彼は
叫ぼうとしました
が、声が出ません。
（叫ぶ：to cry）
He tried to cry out, but found that he could not utter any sound.
女は、少しずつ
彼に近づいて来ます。
（近づく：to come near）
The white woman bent down over him, lower and lower,
そして、彼女の顔が
彼に
ふれそうになりました。
（ふれる：to touch）
until her face almost touched him;
彼は
彼女の目が、とても怖かったのです。
それでも、
彼女が、きれいだ、と思いました。
（怖い：afraid）
and he saw that she was very beautiful, - though her eyes made him afraid.
しばらく、
彼女は
彼を見ていました。
For a little time she continued to look at him;
それから
彼女は、ほほえみ
そして、ささやきました。
（ほほえむ：to smile）
（ささやく：to whisper）
- then she smiled, and she whispered: -

（殺す：to kill）
"I intended to treat you like the other man.

（かわいそう：pity）
But I cannot help feeling some pity for you,
だって、あなたは若いから。
（だって：because）
- because you are so young....

あなたは、かわいい。
You are a pretty boy, Minokichi;
みのきちさん、
私は
あなたを殺しません。
and I will not hurt you now.
でも、もし、あなたが
今夜、見たことを
誰かに言ったら……
たとえ、それが、あなたの、お母さんでも、

そして、あなたを殺します。

But, if you ever tell anybody - even your own mother about what you have seen this night, I shall know it; and then I will kill you....
